Parents - Sharing books with babies and children

This helps them learn to talk and read. Don't worry if you're not used to reading aloud, it's your voice and closeness that count. Your child loves the sound of your voice. Choose a cosy, quiet place and a book, rhyme or song that you enjoy. Point to the pictures and talk about things that your child knows. Try out funny voices and sounds, have fun!

Children quickly learn about books - they will soon be turning pages, perhaps to talk and read for themselves. Your child will love to hear the same story over and over again.

Books are not just for bedtime so take a book with you wherever you go.

Books for babies

Your baby is never too young to get a library card - the earlier the better! There are no fines for books borrowed by children under five.

You'll find lots of board and picture books for you to share with your baby. Most libraries also have story tapes, children's DVDs and videos to hire.

You can borrow books about parenting or find information about playgroups, family centres and support groups. Why not also ask about drop in sessions where you can relax and join in with story telling and singing?
